The Elusive Waterfall...

One day after school last week, the weather was lovely and we didn't want to stay home so I told the kids we would go on a little hike to find a waterfall I had heard about. They thought it was a great idea, so we packed up some snacks and water and headed out.

You would think this would be near the end of the hike, but no. They found these flat rocks near the beginning of the trail and stretched out like little lizards in the sun.

And of course the little copy cat...

Still happy and optimistic at the beginning of the trail with the wildflowers blooming all around us and the beautiful mountains in the distance.

It was truly such a beautiful day!

Of course, since they are my children, they had to climb on anything they could along the way. This was about 2 miles or so into the hike and it was starting to sink in that we may not actually find a waterfall.

Marissa enjoyed this apple as she walked along for a good part of the trail. She ate completely through the middle of it before she was finished.

By the time we reached the 3 mile mark, we realized for sure we had passed the turn-off to the waterfall. We found out later where it was and what we had done wrong. Luckily the trail went in a big loop and so we reached the parking lot about a quarter of a mile past this spot. But still. I was pretty impressed with the kids who hiked over three miles and even more impressed with me, who carried Marissa for quite a bit of it too! She actually walked a lot too, though.

The kids took a fancy to building cairns (I think that's how you spell it...) along the trail. They must have made 20 or so. This one happened to be right in the middle of the trail.

And this one was Maylan's masterpiece. It took a long time to get the little rocks balanced on top like that! Anyway, it was a great day and a great hike and we can't wait to go back and actually find the waterfall next time!
